What is My Haircare Nightmare Documentary Crowd Funding campaign?

With a great start, My Haircare Nightmare Documentary campaign was launched on the 3rd of September this year. It aims to answer the question Are Black Hair Care Products Safe? and highlight the recent research which showed that 80% of products manufactured in the US and marketed to black women contain potentially harmful ingredients linked to EDCs, Asthma, Cancer and Infertility.

Who is the face behind the campaign?

She is Tola Okogwu – mostly known as the founder of the hair blog My long hair journey and children’s author of Daddy Do My Hair? Recently, Tola took part in an interview about hair products for black women on BBC. The hair blogger describes herself as a ‘person, who is constantly seeking to create mirrors and windows, allowing everyone the opportunity to read books that are reflective of their own experiences, backgrounds and cultures’.

Her goal is to answer the question:  Are Black Hair Care Products Safe?

The main objectives are:

  • Educate and empower women caring for Afro-textured hair.
  • Help them make an informed decision about the products they choose to buy and use.
  • Creating a documentary movie that explores the Afro hair care.
  • Raise awareness among black women.

Let’s talk more about the facts

A study published in 2017 by researchers at Rutgers University found a link between breast cancer and the use of hair dyes and relaxers (chemical hair straighteners) in black women. Recently, Nielson Beauty & Personal Care Report stated that black women spend nearly nine-times more than their non-black counterparts on hair products demonstrating a high quantity of product consumption, which means exposure to any harmful chemicals could be high and long-term.
