PRESS RELEASE

‘Black women do not wish their curly or kinky hair to be airbrushed out’

KHEMBE’S RETURN TO YOUR ROOTS FESTIVAL

We are in the midst a revolution. It’s personal and political. Men and women of the black diaspora are making a huge shift. A shift in their approach not only to their hair care but in terms of wellness and lifestyle. Black men and women are reclaiming their birthright, embracing their natural hair texture, and the mainstream is struggling to catch up.

Remember the fiasco of Lupita Nyongo whose natural hair was photo-shopped by UK Grazia magazine? The photographer later apologised and hopefully realised that Black women with naturally curly or kinky hair do not wish to be airbrushed out.

Return to your Roots Birmingham is a natural hair and beauty festival established by Khembe Clarke promoting the power of natural hair movement. The festival, in its fifth year. It is a glorious mix of workshops on protective styles, natural hair products. It also shares vital advice on how to move from chemically treated hair to healthy natural hair.

“The growth of the natural hair movement has been incredible,” says Khembe, Founder of Return to your Roots.“There is a strong interest in going back to natural hair styles and products.  I believe it’s deeper than trend.  I feel it’s about black women and men reclaiming our heritage and realising we are beautiful without needing to conform to a Western version of beauty.”

Kids Workshop and Dads & Daughter’s workshop

The coverage of last year’s show was picked up by the BBC in Midlands who filmed the show’s Kids Workshop and Dads & Daughter’s workshop which went viral: http://bbc.in/2E3qKf4
